Why? Because ideas are fun and I'm a selfish passive-aggressive prick.
Apparently CCP has been seriously thinking about adding new heavy weapons. What about an amarrian antimatter cannon? Think: A laser is used to generate a vacuum channel, then a coilgun accelerates a pellet of antimatter through it. The vacuum prevents early annihilation of the antimatter, as well as stabilizing it since as it approaches the boundary the annihilation rockets it back.
When fired, a low-damage laser beam is projected and the user is completely immobilized. Aim included. Then the antimatter is shot which causes huge direct damage and large splash damage over a medium area. Say, 1 second charge, 20dmg/s laser damage, 2500 direct damage, 4m radius and 400 splash damage. 2 round magazine, 1 second between shots and 6 second reload time. High CPU cost, mid-high PG cost. Very long range.
The idea behind this weapon is being for AV and suppressing fire at long ranges. The immobilization and visible beams make landing a direct shot on infantry near impossible and splash shots difficult for any suit that can sprint faster than 4m/s: The target will notice the damage and flee, but this will also serve to keep the enemy running, preventing them from doing much else. It also leaves the user very vulnerable. This fits the amarrian military doctrine of "fortify and suppress" since it will be effective if the user is where he wants to be, but not very good if the user gets caught with his pants down.
I know the proposed weapon seems to tread on forge gun's toes, especially the assault variant, but the difference is that you can aim while shooting the forge gun and dancers are difficult to kill while with the antimatter cannon everybody knows where you're about to shoot but can't outstrafe it.
Horrifying? That's a strange way to spell "romantic".

Vulpes Dolosus wrote:Antimatter is a hybrid ammo type and partial accelerators are more appropriate for a Gallente or Caldari weaponry. In EVE, players could get away with just flinging antimatter at each other because almost all engagements were in vacuums. You can't fire antimatter in atmosphere and the best way to evacuate a path is with a laser. The laser used to create the vacuum channel would be much higher tech than the accelerator. Therefore it would be better built by a laser expert than a railgun expert. And The Empire has allot of jovian tech. Besides, this doesn't fit Caldari or Gallente doctrine. Caldari are all about sniping and retreating while Gallente are all crazy zerg rush. This is a supressing weapon.
